The main part of the Old Head of Kinsale is now an exclusive (i.e.very expensive) golf club and is out of bounds to anyone who is not a golfer able to pay the high fees. Time was (pre-1997) when anyone and everyone could explore the place at leisure but those days are gone. All efforts to re-open it to the general public have failed and that's the way it's likely to remain. A pity, but there you go.
It is still worth visiting though. There is a car park just outside the main gate and if you walk along the path to the west there are spectacular views. They reminded me of the Cliffs of Moher - except you don't have to pay for the privilege of viewing them. I was there on the evening of the 4th July when the setting sun bathed the Old Head in some wonderful light. It is a place I will definitely return to.

The fees at the Old Head of Kinsale golf club have fallen dramatically - it's now much cheaper than the €1200 per 4-ball it used to charge.
ReplyDeleteLovely to see your photos - I played golf there once, on a magnificent day and loved the golf course while hating the stories I heard of how the public access to the coast had been stolen.
